Central government initiatives
To assist the acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, the central government has announced a number of promotional measures over the last ten years, including tax incentives for EV owners and continued development of public EV charging infrastructure.
i-FEVA works closely with policymakers to track, interpret and advocate for these schemes, ensuring the industry has a clear, unified voice on national policy.
Key national EV policies & initiatives
FAME — Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles
Launched in 2015 to promote adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles. Under FAME-II (launched 2019, extended till March 2024), the government provides financial incentives to buyers of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, buses, and charging infrastructure.
National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP)
Launched in 2013 to achieve significant electrification of the automotive industry and promote manufacturing of electric and hybrid vehicles in India.
GST Reduction
To make EVs more affordable, the government reduced Goods and Services Tax on electric vehicles from 12% to 5% in 2019.
Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Program
A proposed program by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways that would mandate a certain percentage of vehicle sales to be electric or hybrid.
National Electric Mobility Infrastructure Scheme (NEMIS)
Launched to support development of robust charging infrastructure across the country, aiming to establish public charging stations in selected cities and along major highways.
Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP)
An initiative to promote local manufacturing of electric vehicle components and reduce dependence on imports, offering incentives to manufacturers setting up production facilities in India.
Green Tax Incentives
Several Indian states have introduced green tax incentives — including lower registration fees and road tax — to promote the use of electric vehicles.
